Prior to a consultation you will be asked to fill in a questionnaire giving details of your household and the environment that your pet lives in, as well as some details of the behaviour problem/s that you are experiencing.
This allows the behaviourist to build up a picture of the problem prior to meeting you and removes the need for writing down information during the consultation. You may aslo be asked to keep a brief diary of your pet's behaviour over a 7 day period.
The point of seeing your pet with you at home, is to give the behaviourist an opportunity to see your pet's behaviour, in the places that you usually experience problems. This may be at your home, or in the case of dogs, the places that you normally exercise him or her. Very anxious pets will usually be more relaxed at home, giving the behaviourist an opportunity to demonstrate techniques that you will be able to use.
All the members of the family who are usually involved with your pet are encouraged to attend the consultation, so that they can have an input and hear the advice given. The behaviourist will discuss your pets problem and help you to understand how it has developed and what you can do to resolve the issue. This generally involves demonstrating techniques or equipment and teaching you how to use them .
Clinic consultations last for between 1 1/2 and 2 1/2 hours. They are not suitable for every case as it is often necessary to observe your pet in it's home environment to assess the problem accurately.
However, clinic consultations offer a more economical option than home visits, as the time & costs associated with travelling are not incurred.
The consultation will follow the same format as a home visit, with a full assessment of the problem, followed by advise and demonstration of appropriate techniques. Again, all members of the family who care for you pet, are encouraged to attend.
Following the initial consultation, much of the rest is down to you as the owner of the pet. You will be given information sheets at the intial consultation, and approximately 10 to 14 days later, you will recieve a full report and Behaviour Modification Plan describing the nature of your pet's behaviour problem and containing a comprehensive tailored plan for you to follow.
For some cases a follow-up consultation is included in the fee. Advice via phone or email is included for as long as is necessary in all cases, and further appointments are offered at a reduced rate as and when necessary.
